American News Project

story title: No Debate: Hempstead is Struggling

As Hempstead, NY prepared to host the last presidential debate, local people hit hard by the financial crisis tell stories that the debates left out.

This American News Project (ANP) short featured the story of Jocelyn Voltaire, a local Haitian woman whose Iraq veteran son had died the same month her home went into foreclosure. Jocelyn's heart-wrenching victimization by a predatory lender became a major story on Huffington Post and attracted the attention of Code Pink.

A few days later I returned to Hempstead by myself to shoot a follow-up story for ANP focusing on Jocelyn. Leveraging the power of the two videos, Code Pink was able to raise over $20,000 on her behalf, which helped persuade a judge to grant her a reprieve allowing her to stay in her home.

Defending a School from anti-Muslim Hysteria

On Monday August 21, 2007, supporters of Khalil Gibran International Academy (KGIA) held a rally outside the Department of Education. Many members of the press (including Fox News) squeezed into the tight space allotted by the NYPD for the demonstration. The speeches focused on setting the media and public straight about how KGIA will foster understanding of the Arab language and culture, and how desperately the school is needed to educate ambassadors who can one day overcome the bigotry and ignorance displayed by the backlash against the school and its principal, Debbie Almontaser.

When Hillier Architecture, one of the largest and most prestigious architecture firms in the U.S., needed an extreme shooter/producer to capture one of their most ambitious projects, I jumped at the chance. In this symphonic eight-minute sequence, a German-built staircase and freestanding glass enclosure are installed on a terrace sixteen stories above Central Park.

Three brothers ride out Hurricane Katrina in their father’s house in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. An intimate, spooky family portrait that starts as a father’s adventurous challenge and rapidly turns to a fight for survival.

"The brothers provide choice insights on dad’s use of Hurricane Katrina as part of his larger Psyops training program for his sons...This amazing footage provides a strong narrative structure and is amplified craftfully with background alarm noise and ambient panic."

The Case of Geoffrey Blank

Producer/DP/Editor: Konrad Aderer
Documentary-in-progress. Geoffrey Blank faces four years in prison for his anti-war demonstrations during the 2004 Republican National Convention.

Geoffrey is an intensely outspoken anti-war activist who, like over 1,800 others, was arrested during the Republican National Convention in 2004. His last arrest, in August 2004, was ostensibly for speaking on a bullhorn in Union Square Park without a permit. He's currently on trial in a consolidated case which comprises a laundry list of demonstrably false charges stemming from his anti-war activities. If convicted, Geoffrey could be imprisoned for four years.

Despite the peril he's in, Geoffrey staged a protest right below District Attorney Robert Morgenthau's office calling the NYPD "treasonous" for its campaign of politically tinged arrests.

Producer/DP: Konrad Aderer

In this short documentary we meet the Alams, a Bangladeshi family living in Coney Island, Brooklyn. Mohammed Alam, father to two young U.S.-born daughters, is one of 13,000 immigrants facing deportation as a consequence of Special Registration, a post-9/11 policy which targeted nationals of Muslim countries. But the Alams are not just victims. Learn how they fight back as members of South Asian community organization D.R.U.M. (Desis Rising Up and Moving).

Rising Up: The Alams was produced for the non-profit media project Life or Liberty, as part of Third World Newsreel's Call For Change series.

Near Accra, the capital city of Ghana, Liberians still live in a refugee camp where basic needs are precious. This was a PSA for a program of the U.S. Agency for International Development which I shot as a field producer for Off Ramp Films. Below is a rough sample of footage I shot covering a USAID-funded eye clinic in Budumburam refugee camp.
